Voron 2.4 Build

 This is the placeholder for the Voron 2.4 build. It's not a blow by blow account of how to make one; there are plenty of videos on YouTube for that. More a case of the things I've done slightly differently and why I've done them.

  • Reverse text on the 12864 display. The light characters on dark background have never really been my favourite, much prefer dark characters on a nice bright background. Click the link for how to change the text colours around
  • Deck panel retention. The deck panel in 4mm plastic sheet is held on by four bolts, however these are towards the centre of the panel. There is no securing at the edge, so the edges can flap around and I have heard of the panels distorting under the heat. It's possible to secure the edges using some brackets, click the link for more.
  • Cable management. I've seen quite a few videos on Voron 2.4 builds where the builders have used a "rats nest" wiring scheme. Functionally, that's not an issue, however my own preference is for tidy wiring so I can see where everything is going. Here's a cable tray arrangement which can be bolted to the base panel seeing as it's very securely fixed now.

Other differences

The build instructions call for the parts to be made in ABS which can sometimes pose a problem if you don't already own an enclosed 3D printer. My own experience of ABS on an open frame machine is that it's notoriously hard to print without the edges lifting up and the parts going out of shape. So my two i3 machines were going to struggle. The latest i3 machines excel at printing PETG but this is not suited to making parts for high temperature applications like the Voron (ABS/ASA/Nylon are best). In the end, I opted for ASA and bought three reels of Polymaker branded material to do the job. This produced excellent results, I only had two corner lifts out of 180 parts so can recommend this as a good alternative to ABS if you don't have access to an enclosed machine.

The vendor who provided my kit of parts (Formbot) didn't have any SKR 1.4 boards due to a chip shortage so provided a single Octoplus board, again from BigTreeTech (BTT). This does the work of two SKR1.4's and has worked well - it's a great board. No documentation on the site specific to this board, however I did an Excel sheet with all the connections and a sample firmware config file which may help others using this board. Please note these files are Work In Progress and I haven't completed the machine yet! Also the config files is for a 350mm machine.
